Len demonstrates how to first paint the under-painting using good design principles, and then paint the portrait on top of the background. As you give consideration to the design and planned accidents of color in the under-painting, the portrait emerges from the background with a life and energy of its own. Of course, the Alphabet of Design is incorporated in the decision making process as the painting is developed to give it that masterful quality of design.
